the eucatastrophe of helm's deep

I remember vividly experiencing this eucatastrophe. It can be described as a big-time bring it!

I was watching one of the ROTK extended DVD appendices yesterday. In the portion about Tolkien, one interviewee referred to something C.S. Lewis said:

A myth is a story that everybody knows about even if they can't remember ever reading or hearing any version of it.

Following up, the interviewee said that LOTR is something "everybody knows about . . . even if they haven't read it. It has become part of the mental furniture of the culture."

On the DVD they also talked about eucatastrophe and Tolkien's Christian worldview. Very nice. It gave me a better appreciation for the meaning of that word...

The gathering of the Orc's for slaughter, of course! I'm trying to write a fairy story and am plagued about getting the eucatastrophe in it. It helps to have other examples. This is a good one.

I remember sitting next to Cdog the first time he saw this eucatastrophe. I thought when the White Wizard showed up on the horizon that Cdog was going to come out of his chair. I think it may have been his first "big screen"experience. And oh! what an incredible big screen experience it was even for one who's been to many a big screen. I have to say that the image of Gandolf on that white horse(Shadowfax) caused thoghts of The Revelation of Jesus Christ to flood my mind. What an incredible and victorious Christ we serve!!

just finished watching the "new" scenes for Return a few minutes ago. the extended version is so helpful in filling the gaps!

regardless of edition, the best line is still "You love but a shadow and a thought. I can not give you what you seek."

ps - i know helm's deep is from the two towers. =)

I think, probably, one of my favorite scenes in the trilogy.
